Research can say a lot about about a new instrument. The original research published in JAPMA shows that the device provides more distraction and exposure than other methods.
However, testimonials from surgeons who currently rely on the Tarsal Joint Distractor can provide a sense of the benefits you will get from using it yourself.

"I realize time is of the essence intraoperatively however if you just take a couple of minutes to get the distractor where it should be to make your access most optimal it will definitely cut down on overall OR time because you won't need to alway re-adjust like you get with other forms of distraction."

"I use the distractor a fair amount. I use it for all Evans and c-c (calcaneocuboid) joint fusions, most T-N (talonavicular fusions), and Subtalar joint fusions. I just did a navicular cuneiform fusion and it worked great. I have also used in on ankle fusions and I will use it if I do a 1st met-cuneiform fusion without correction. It has been a very useful tool."

"I have had the opportunity to use the Tarsal Joint Distractor by Tarsal Instruments. The device provided excellent distraction for all proximal medial column, midfoot and rearfoot joints. Of particular help was being able to apply the device during a calcaneal slide procedure and have it secure with no risk of popping off. While waiting for soft tissue relaxation I was able to address other portions of the foot deformity and not waste tourniquette time or scrub time by having to maintain distraction manually before moving the posterior fragment.
Also of note: Good visualization is obtained of the talonavicular joint during preparation of the surfaces for fusion - extremely important for this difficult-to-fuse joint."

"I like [the Tarsal Joint Distractor] for any opening wedge procedure, especially the Evans procedure. It makes it nice to gradually open the graft site and check position. Once proper alignment is achieved, it makes it easier to form the graft to that size, open the Evan's site up a bit more and slide in the graft, then close it back down. Works like a charm!"
